For awhile now, I've been interested in the Freedos opperating system. It's supposed to be pretty much a duplicate of dos, but with a few differences. I'm more interested, however, in Freedos-32, which aims to extend the functionality of Freedos. From what I've heard, it uses modern programs even things like dsl and it has an optional graphical interface. Plus, it has the ability to truly multitask. What I want to know is will these opperating systems work with screenreaders like Vocalize or JAWS For Dos? If so, has anyone here used Freedos-32? Can it handle things like messangers, today's websites, mp3 players etc? Can it work on modern machines? What about using software synthesizers?
freedos? like the chip? had2say that lol. actually jaws for dos doesn't support any software synths. unless you can somehow create a virtual comport, with an interface to whatever synth you want to use and the one you have selected in the jfd setup, and tell jaws to input to that? sorry i wasn't much help. o and the latest jfd is 2.3!
We'ee'e! I bet I know someone who can do that. Thanks.
If by having a gui and beeing able to multitask this comes close to offering something useable by the mainstreem community then yeah, i'd do this.
But just ponder for a minute how many things that your os does that you take for granted?
I'm using a laptop thats running off battery, thats the os.
I'm connected to the internet whilst lieing in my bed; the hardware might be there but its pointless with out the driver.
Etc - the list goes on. I bet that virtual port thing is dooable - chears.
smeg! only meant that port thing as a suggestion, but would be cool if it works! although you will need to know the commands for the synth you select in jfd setup. hth!
Information on the commands used by the Doubletalk synthesizer is available on www.rcsys.com somewhere. It should be possible to write something which would access a virtual serial port and translate this to SAPI for speaking. Just a thought.
I do know of something called, if I remember correctly, Virtual Machine. It's basically a program that creates a computer inside of a computer. And I hear it's truly accessible now. Anyway, something like that may work.
essentially you are correct, virtual machines made by vmware let you run another operating system from with in the host operating system.
Although i doubt this would be the best solution - surely you can get drivers that emulate serial ports? That way your not having to run 2 operating systems just to get speech.
